Sexting, the Law & You, England
Sexting, the Law & You is a lesson that explores the legal language of common sexting activities and introduces pupils to real life scenarios and how they are viewed by the legal authorities.
This lesson comprises two versions to cover pupils in age groups, 11-14 years, and 15-18 years. They reflect differences in maturity. Pupils will explore the legal language of common sexting activities based on real life scenarios and how the legal authorities view them.
Sexting is not a legal term but can have serious legal consequences. It can affect future job choices, even for voluntary work, if reported to the police. This fully resourced lesson has been developed by a lawyer in consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service and other legal services. It conforms to the laws of England and complies with the latest government guidance on relationship and sex education. Other experts consulted include more than 20 teachers, many experienced in developing training materials for schools, youth and community leaders, psychiatrists, doctors, psychologists and many parents. This lesson, along with the others in this series, has been piloted across the UK.
Sexting, the Law & You, England is the third of our three lessons on Sexting. It can be taught as a stand-alone lesson or after Introduction to Sexting and Sexting, Pornography & the Adolescent Brain. All lessons are available together in a value bundle or in a superbundle with 4 lessons on Internet Pornography.
How the lesson works
Pupils will consider case studies in pairs or small groups and in a full class discussion. The Teacher’s Guide provides you with all the information you need to deliver the lesson and enable you to speak confidently about the subjects raised. There are links to research papers where appropriate and signposting to other relevant resources and websites. It does not constitute legal advice but rather provides an overview of the some of the key legal issues around sexting.
