Sexting, the Law & You is a lesson that explores the legal language of common sexting activities and introduces pupils to real life scenarios and how they are viewed by the legal authorities.

Description

We provide two lessons to cover pupils in age groups, 11-14 years, and for 15-18 years. These reflect differences in maturity. Pupils will explore the legal language of common sexting activities. These are based on real life scenarios and how the legal authorities view them.

Sexting is not a legal term but has serious legal consequences. It can affect future job choices, even for voluntary work, if reported to the police. A Scottish Advocate (lawyer) developed this lesson in consultation with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration, Disclosure Scotland, the police and campus cops.

It conforms to the law of Scotland and complies with the latest Scottish Government guidance on the relationship and sexual health and parenting programme. Other experts consulted include more than 20 teachers, youth leaders, psychiatrists, doctors, psychologists and many parents.

The lessons align with the requirements of the Curriculum for Excellence. We have piloted the lessons in seven schools across Scotland.

Sexting, the Law & You, Scotland is the second of our two lessons on Sexting. It can be taught as a stand-alone lesson or after Introduction to Sexting.

How the lesson works

Pupils will discuss case studies in pairs or small groups and in a full class discussion.

The Teacher’s Guide provides you with all the information you need to deliver the lesson. It will enable you to speak confidently about the subjects raised. There are links to research papers where appropriate and signposting to other relevant resources and websites. It does not constitute legal advice. Rather it provides an overview of the some of the key legal issues around sexting.
