The Reward Foundation’s campaign to raise awareness of porn issues made a big step forward today with a front page story in The Sunday Times. The article also appeared in the online edition here, subscription is required for access to the full article. We’ll post the full story later.
Under the banner headline of “Porn can ruin pupils’ lives, fear top schools” the story was written by Mark Macaskill, 2016 Journalist of the Year at the Scottish Press Awards. He wrote that “There is a growing body of scientific research linking prolonged exposure to pornography with a deterioration in mental health and impotence.”
In the story Mary Sharpe outlines The Reward Foundation’s work in developing and delivering porn awareness training to Scottish schools.
Strong quotes are provided by Liz Langley, Head of Personal and Social Education at Dollar Academy and Cameron Wylie, the Principal of George Heriot’s School.
The charity aims to raise awareness about the vulnerability of the adolescent brain to the hyper-stimulating impact of online porn. With 90% of people under 20 with smart phones, and a natural curiosity from around age 10 onwards for everything to do with sex, they need to be educated about how to prevent and if necessary, recover from over stimulation. Research indicated that more than 88% of porn videos contains violence and brutality against women. This does not teach kids about safe, loving sexual relationships.
